to making a decision about purchasing one. We want to find lifetime homes for our pups.
These dogs have rough and smooth coats that come in different colors. They have intelligent almond eyes with an intense gaze. This is called their ‘herding eye.’ Border collies are highly trainable and love agility training.
Their coats range from black, black-and-tan, and reddish-brown. They usually have white markings. Some border collies can be merle, brindle, or mostly white in color. Coat colors, though, aren’t linked to working characteristics.
Border collie characteristics. Border collies are medium-sized dogs that are muscular but nimble. Males are usually 19 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder. Females are slightly smaller, between 18 and 21 inches tall. Male and female border collies both weigh around 30 to 55 pounds. They generally live to be 12-16 years old.
Border collies are herding dogs that were bred to herd livestock like sheep. They’re an intelligent, obedient breed. Border collies are energetic, smart, and athletic dogs. Consequently, they need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. There’s even been one case of a border collie who learned to recognize over 1,000 words.
In general, Border Collies are energetic, even-tempered and eager to please, making them a good choice for a family pet. They get along well with children and other pets provided they are introduced properly.
Does a Border Collie belong on a farm? Some breeders will tell you yes, but after 45 years of owning Border Collies, I can tell you that they can be successful in many different environments. The most important thing is that are provided with mental and physical exercise, as well as being cared for properly and loved. I've had very successful families that purchase them as pets , as well successful herding, therapy , and agility dogs.
Are Border Collies okay in the house , or are they always active? A good Border Collie will have what's called an "off switch". They are capable of running and playing for hours , but they are also content to cuddle up and sleep . We actually encourage quiet time for them.
How are they with other pets and children? In general, they get along well with other animals and love to meet new people. They live to "manipulate " anything that moves, so you may catch your Border Collie trying to herd the other dog, cat or kid. As they age, they adapt to their new surroundings and environment and will treat their family as their "pack", and will want to always be with you.
Im elderly or disabled. Will a BC be a good dog for me? I generally recommend dogs to active families. However , I do breed some that are more laid back with lower drive that can be successful with less active families.
